In order to comprehend why the stool color in adults, sometimes changes to green, one needs to focus on how the digestive system functions. The liver is responsible for producing bile. Bile is a fluid that aids in fat absorption and fat-soluble vitamins. The bile once secreted, divulges into the small intestine or in the bladder. Bile plays a major role in deciding the color of the stool and the consistency as well. The stool being thick, slim or watery, and the color being white, brown or green, depends upon the way the bile fluid functions and gets secreted. In a normal healthy stool, the bile color changes from green, progressing to yellow and finally brown. Thus, it could be concluded that the cause of green poop in adults may be due to the fact that the feces has not passed through the intestine at a normal pace, hence leaving the color unchanged. This is a malfunction of the bowel movement and is termed decreased bowel transit. Another factor contributing to the causes of green stool is the presence of mucus in the intestine. This may cause its color and the consistency to change.
Stool softeners as the name suggests, are substances that increase the water-holding capacity of stools and increase the bulk of stool, which in turn stimulates bowel contractions and helps passage of stool out of the body. They are used to relieve problems of constipation and irregular bowel movements. Constipation is a condition in which the person's stool is hard, dry and difficult to evacuate from the body, resulting in irregular bowel movements. Moreover, passing hard stool becomes painful and uncomfortable. People suffering from constipation have their food staying longer in the digestive tract. This results in production of toxins, which make their way into the bloodstream of the body. These toxins can trigger diseases like cataract, arthritis, colon cancer, appendicitis, etc. To prevent all these problems one should use stool softeners.
Chlorophyll rich vegetables may be one of the reason behind dark green stool. If the green vegetables are taken in excess, they may cause your stool green. Hence there is no need to panic, but if you are still worried about it, then stop the consumption of green vegetables for few days and observe your stool. As green vegetables are some of the healthiest foods, start its consumption once your doubts are clear.
It is quite common in newborns and infants. Dark green stools are generally passed by newborn babies. These dark green stools are called meconium which consist of all the matter the fetus consumed in the womb like intestinal epithelial cells, mucus, amniotic fluid, lanugo, bile and water. This meconium is sterile and has no odor. Newborns pass meconium for a few days and then gradually pass yellow-green stools due to digestion of breast milk.
