If your child goes on for days without having a single bowel movement, he might be constipated. In this case as well, the nature of the stool plays an important part in identifying if your child is constipated or not. Constipated children usually pass large, hard stools, which cause a lot of pain to them. As a result, the child avoids bowel movement, since he associates it with pain. This leads to the pile up of waste materials in the body and aggravates the problem of chronic constipation in children. Stool softeners can be used to eliminate the problem of constipation in children. Polyethylene glycol 3350 is often prescribed by pediatricians for children with constipation, since it can be tolerated well by all kids. This is an odorless and colorless powder, which can be mixed with water. Docusate, Senokot, Bisacodyl, etc., are some of the stimulant laxatives, which can be safely administered for children. Metamucil is a good stool softener for toddlers in the age group of 2 to 5. Although, corn syrup is widely used as a natural stool softener, its use for children is not recommended due to certain risks associated with it.

It is seen that stool softeners are used in the long term treatment of constipation. The dose of the softeners given to the patient depends on his condition. In some cases, the dosage may have to be increased as well. However, it does not mean, that they should be consumed everyday. Once the problem is solved, the patient should go off the stool softeners. Absorption of mineral oil and some medications from the intestine is observed, when one consumes emollient laxatives. Absorption of mineral oil is not healthy for the body, as it can accumulate in the lymph nodes and liver, where it can give rise to inflammation. It is important that a stool softener is also not consumed with mineral oil or also with other prescription medications.
There are many other causes also which may result in green color stool. Some liver disorder like jaundice may cause you green stool. Apart from this, the first stool of infants known as meconium is dark green in color and is very normal. Irritable bowel syndrome can also cause green color in stool.
