Before initiating the treatment, the underlying cause of green stool in children or in adults is confirmed with a lab diagnosis. It is done through an examination of a stool sample. The tests which are usually employed include X-ray, blood tests, a procedure known as stool culture, and colonoscopy procedure. The type of treatment for a particular patient is driven by the nature of the symptoms, the causal factor(s) and test results. Affected patients may be recommended changes in their diet, apart from administrating medications for maintaining digestive health.
Lab diagnosis, such as conducting blood tests, X-ray, and study of the stool culture, helps in understanding the reason behind green stool in children and adults. A colonoscopy is also helpful, where stool culture is examined through which results are derived.
If you are suffering from constipation, immediately begin the diet of raw vegetables and fresh fruits. As fruits and vegetables are a good source of dietary fiber, you can rest assured that it soften the stool and help in hydrating your body. Include fruits such as prunes, pears, blueberries, lemon, guava, apples, strawberries, oranges, grapes, figs, papaya, pineapple, peaches, and apricots. As for vegetables, eat Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, corn, potatoes, celery, lettuce, peas, green turnips, and carrots.
A child's digestive system is very sensitive to different foods. The most common cause of food poisoning in children is E.coli. This bacterial infection can lead to dark green or light green stools. If the child suffers from abdominal cramps, fever and green stool is visible for three consecutive days, take your child to a doctor.
