They come in various forms of capsules, tablets, and syrups. The dosage will be as per your physician's recommendations. Usually, they are not to be consumed for longer than a week, unless your physician advises you to do so. Also, the tablets and capsules should be consumed as a whole, with a glass of water. You can take it with a glass of milk or fruit juice, to camouflage its bitter taste. In case you missed the dose, you should take it as soon as you remember it. If it's almost the time for the next dose, then you can skip it and take the next one on time.
There is this green fluid known as bile that is secreted or produced by the liver. This fluid goes into the small intestine or it gets stored in the bladder. It is required for the absorption of fat and fat soluble vitamins. Also, the fluid is responsible for making the feces soft, and giving them the typical brown color. As the bile progresses, it changes from green to yellow and finally to brown. So in most cases, passing green stool means that the food must have passed through the intestines at a faster rate than normal, before getting changing to brown. This is known as decreased bowel transit time, and a malfunction such as this may be caused by conditions such as diarrhea. Also, stress may affect the normal digestion process and speed it up, again decreasing the transit time, thus, resulting in green stool.
Taking stool softeners during pregnancy is considered to be safe. The active ingredients in the stool softeners are not absorbed by the body, unless it is taken in large dosages. Therefore, it does not have an adverse effect on the growing baby. However, it is important that stool softeners be taken after consulting your health care professional. Same is the case with taking any other kind of laxatives. The health care professional will take your health into consideration, before recommending a stool softener or any other laxative to you.
A stool analysis for color and texture variations as well as microbial content, is important for the detection and/or confirmation of several diseases. However, in most cases, such variations are simply due to dietary changes, and may not be a cause for concern.
