Many food products such as candies, cake frosting, ice-cream, etc,. contain artificial food colors. Certain drinks also contain artificial color. These colors may result in green color stool. These food colors are unhealthy, hence you should avoid the consumption of products having artificial color.
The high iron content in these supplements is the reason why stool appears greenish in color. Although, iron requirements rise due to increased quantity of blood during pregnancy, there is a possibility that some amount of supplemental iron might not get absorbed. This malabsorption of iron prompts the body to eliminate iron salts during bowel movements. As a result, the stools get an unusual color that is seen in shades of green.
Our stool is supposed to be soft and not loose so that it can remove wastes likes extra fat and toxins from our body. Even though constipation can occur in some from time to time, if an individual is experiencing it on a regular basis, he/she should check with the doctor immediately as there might be a bigger health concern.
There are many other causes also which may result in green color stool. Some liver disorder like jaundice may cause you green stool. Apart from this, the first stool of infants known as meconium is dark green in color and is very normal. Irritable bowel syndrome can also cause green color in stool.
